In Focus: international water polo

Some sports are just a joy to photograph, and water polo is one of them. The action is slow enough to make it easy for even a novice to follow, while the splash and spray of the water builds in a real-life version of a cartoonist’s ‘whizz’ lines. When the action takes place outdoors, in bright sunlight, as in Kazan for the 2015 FINA World Championships, the effect is even more impressive. These group stage games were not the most enthralling sporting encounters, but in a sport that often resembles a mix of synchronised swimming and all-in wrestling, they provided some striking images.
