Ryhope CW have been a feature of this community on the south side of Sunderland even since there was a colliery there. The pit is now long gone, but the legacy of football, cricket, bowls and even a historic pigeon cree on the nearby allotments all remain, testament to the passions of miners and their descendants.
This game was Ryhope’s first in Northern League Division One, following their second promotion from Division Two. The previous time they won the second tier, only to fall foul of ground gradings and move down to the Wearside League, rather than up to the top flight. The long-awaited Division One debut didn’t go entirely as hoped: Ryhope struggled all season to put out strong teams for midweek games, and this one ended in a 1-4 defeat against Jarrow Roofing.
